Check Out This Student Hunger Awareness Video

Posted by Kristen

It was made by my students at The American University of Rome. They are top 5 finalists in the UN’s Hungerbytes Video Competition. The authors of the video that receives the most views by October 16, 2008 (World Hunger Day) will be sent to a developing country to film a World Food Programme Feeding Center. Pass it on! :-) Thanks.

Bacilio’s House Project is Complete!

posted by Kristen

Thanks to all our donors and supporters at Aura’s House who helped us complete our $5500 goal to build Bacilio Ramirez and family a safe, sturdy brick home.

Construction will begin in the weeks ahead and we will post text updates, letters, and photos as we receive them from our partner Children International.  We are currently only accepting donations to help furnish the new home. Stay tuned for Small Project 18 and our new main project which will be announced (and hopefully launched) in the weeks ahead.

Happy New Year and all the best for 2008 from the team at Aura’s House.

Update from our Philippines Classroom Project at Aura’s House

posted by Kristen

This post was made by one of our most dedicated repeat donors at Aura’s House. He recently visited our completed classroom at the Santo Nino Elementary School in the Philippines. Thanks to Aura’s House donations the school now enjoys this much needed addition to their cramped building. Please read Evergreen’s account and my response below.

“This past Monday, December 17th, I had the opportunity to visit Christian Capin at Santo Nino Elementary School in Manila. Upon my arrival I was treated like royalty by the school majorettes with a dance routine. The classroom built by Aura’s house is a significant improvement to a very crowded school compound which contains thousands of students. Christian is a tiny little boy, who proudly presented me with a certificate, a handmade drawing of his new classroom, and a Christmas card. I was greeted warmly by his fellow classmates who just beamed while an older 3rd grade student sang “Hero” to me. It was a very moving experience for me and I think all of the donors to this project should be justifiably proud of their accomplishment.”

First of all, THANK YOU so much for visiting the school. I hope I can make the trip one of these days. Christian always had such personality to me just through photos. I can just imagine how sparkling he must be in person.
I’ve been thinking about you and your trip. Did the storms affect you? Did you run across any problems?
I’m glad to hear that you are safe and sound.
I and the Aura’s House crew wish you the happiest of holidays and all the best for 2008. Thanks for all you do on behalf of needy children.
Kristen

ps. Hope you don’t mind if I include your words in our next newsletter and make a new post here.

African Crucible: Cast as Witches, Then Cast Out

NY Times Article: UIGE, Angola — Domingos Pedro was only 12 years old when his father died. The passing was sudden; the cause was a mystery to doctors. But not to Domingos’s relatives.

Domingos Pedro, 15, left, at home in northern Angola with his brother. After he was accused by relatives of being a witch, he was beaten and terrorized. Even his mother is suspicious of him.

They gathered that afternoon in Domingos’s mud-clay house, he said, seized him and bound his legs with rope. They tossed the rope over the house’s rafters and hoisted him up until he was suspended headfirst over the hard dirt floor. Then they told him they would cut the rope if he did not confess to murdering his father.

“They were yelling, ‘Witch! Witch!’” Domingos recalled, tears rolling down his face. “There were so many people all shouting at me at the same time.”

On Anti Anti-Americanism

Posted by Kristen

This is a recent BBC article on UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s stance on being anti anti-American.

As an American living abroad, anti-Americanism is something myself and many of my students have to deal with. Luckily, after many people meet an actual American, minds can change and hearts can soften. Americans ARE the largest group of donors in the world to humanitarian causes. My husband works now for the UN’s World Food Programme and he (a German) says that the United States is their largest supporter and of overwhelming proportions. The next two countries that come close are Japan and Germany.

While of course we are not perfect by any means and there is much to be improved, it’s nice to hear once in a while from others who are against anti-Americanism.

How Much Do People Spend In The World on Food?

Posted by Kristen

“Ever wondered how you rank with the rest of the world in the amount of money you spend on food in a week? I got this email and it has some great pictures along with the amount of cash each family spends in feeding themselves for a week all around the world. Guess how much money refugees from Darfur spend in a week at Briedjing Camp for food?”
